MY THOUGHTS

This was a fitting conclusion to the Immortal Series with many favourite characters reappearing to provide answers for questions that were raised from the very first book. However the author is not content to just play with existing people, he successfully adds some new persona’s to the mix, who help mould a whole new story and give dimension to Adam. Gene crafts another backdrop of events and misfortunes culminating in a resolution that successfully satisfies both the current trajectory and the issues raised in previous novels.

There is Adam and there is Eve, two extraordinary people who seem to have crossed paths many times throughout history. What is the mystery that surrounds Eve and why is she so elusive. Why is Claire so distant, what happened to scare her away? Immortal at the Edge of the World has all the answers.

I’m not sure how I feel about Adam and Eve and what is related about their previous relationship. It’s not pretty, though I never expected it would be. Having said that, I never imagined that Adam would have treated anyone so poorly, regardless of the era in which such events occurred. He always seemed such a gentleman, even if reluctantly so. The one point I took from this particular circumstance was that one event does not necessarily define a person, but your actions can certainly have a lasting impact on others. Thank God we can’t all live to be 60 000 yrs old, imagine the grudges people would hold!

Adam and Claire is a different story again, I’m not sure I believed Claires reasoning nor could I understand how Adam could not know. (Though I can’t really go into that without giving some very obvious spoilers away - so that is a conversation for people who have read the series).

There is a new heroine in Immortal at the Edge of the World  who shows a great deal of promise, someone who will hopefully stick around for a bit longer yet. I wonder what her life expectancy is?

Realistically I think the tale of the Immortal Adam could go on forever. For a man that has lived for 60 000 years he surely has to have a lot more stories to be told… and I hear the author is now publishing short stories of our favourite Immortal Man, all of which should be available on Amazon - so go and check them out.

~~SUMMARY~~

Immortal-Edge-of-World-3D-Bookstack“What I was currently doing with my time and money . . . didn’t really deserve anyone else’s attention. If I was feeling romantic about it, I’d call it a quest, but all I was really doing was trying to answer a question I’d been ignoring for a thousand years.”

In his very long life, Adam had encountered only one person who seemed to share his longevity: the mysterious red-haired woman. She appeared throughout history, usually from a distance, nearly always vanishing before he could speak to her.

In his last encounter, she actually did vanish—into thin air, right in front of him. The question was how did she do it? To answer, Adam will have to complete a quest he gave up on a thousand years earlier, for an object that may no longer exist.

If he can find it, he might be able to do what the red-haired woman did, and if he can do that, maybe he can find her again and ask her who she is . . . and why she seems to hate him.

“You are being watched. Move your loved ones to safety . . . trust nobody.”

But Adam isn’t the only one who wants the red-haired woman. There are other forces at work, and after a warning from one of the few men he trusts, Adam realizes how much danger everyone is in. To save his friends and finish his quest he may be forced to bankrupt himself, call in every favor he can, and ultimately trade the one thing he’d never been able to give up before: his life.

From the author of Immortal and Hellenic Immortal comes Immortal at the Edge of the World, the breathtaking conclusion to the best-selling trilogy. Will Adam survive?

"Brilliant end to the trilogy, with much twistiness involved in tying up all the plotlines. Lots of humour and typical Adam-ness - but no spoilers from me. You'll just have to read it for yourself. I think this might be my favourite of the series.+  - Andrea Goodreads Review

Excerpt:

Darcy clenched her teeth, released Tellius’s hand, and took the lead. Before she knew it, she was running, strength coming from some hidden reserves of adrenaline. She crested the ridge and swung into Archaios’s cave, ignoring the giant white dragon and the stabs of cold that informed her shadow creatures were nearby.
Sam lay on a pallet of furs near the spring of water in the back of the cave, with her golden hair fanned out around her pale face and her eyes fixed on Perry, who knelt at her side. Lewis and Dean, who also looked pale and ill, but not nearly as much, sat nearby with their backs against the cave wall, staring into space.
“Sam!” Darcy cried, diving beside her best friend and taking up her cold hand.
Sam’s lashes fluttered, and she squeezed Darcy’s hand briefly. Her blue eyes, somehow paler than before, caught Darcy’s gaze, and she smiled. “You made it,” she whispered. “I’ve been waiting for you.”
“What do you mean? Don’t talk like that!”
Sam smiled. She was thin—her chin and jaw looked sharp and angular, her eyes sunken. The pallor of her skin held a blue tint, and her hand lay limp in Darcy’s. Darcy cast an anguished look at Perry and saw in his expression a lack of hope. She shook her head and looked back down at Sam.
“No. No, no, no.” Darcy brought both hands together over Sam’s, sandwiching her limp one between them, and tried to send warmth and strength into her. But she had no magical connection with Sam, no marriage bond that allowed for the transference of power, and Sam did not warm or stir.
“It’s okay,” Sam whispered. “I’m ready. I understand now—what my purpose was here. I’ve done what I was sent to do, and now I can rest, and I don’t have to be afraid anymore.”
Darcy’s face crinkled, and her vision blurred with hot tears.
“You’re going to be just fine, Darcy—you know that, right?” Sam’s voice was barely a breath of air. “Remember, why you do what you do matters. And . . .” Her gaze left Darcy’s and strayed to the ceiling. “Life is greater than death.” She sighed. “I’ve always believed in you, Darcy.”
Darcy sniffed and gasped. “I know, Sam. I’ve never deserved your friendship. I wasn’t worthy of your loyalty.”
Sam smiled again, her eyes still fixed on the ceiling. “That’s why you needed it.”
Darcy bit her lip, her chest heaving. “I love you, Sam. Please don’t go!”
“I love you, too,” Sam said, looking back at her, then at Perry. “And you. But in different ways.”
Her smile was teasing, and it tore Darcy’s heart to shreds. Darcy bowed her head and sobbed.
Sam’s fingers fluttered. “I’m very tired,” she whispered.
“Do something,” Perry said to Darcy, his voice breaking.
Darcy shook her head. “I don’t know what to do.”
“I’m very tired,” Sam said again, her voice remote, her volume dropping even more. “But I needed to tell you one more thing, Darcy.”
Darcy leaned close. “Yes?” she asked, her face hovering over Sam’s.
Sam speared her with an intense gaze, and then she turned and nodded toward the far wall of the cave where Boitheia stood watching them.
“She will betray you,” Sam said in the barest of whispers.
Darcy parted her lips and knit her brow.

“Wh—”

“Let her,” Sam said.

Summary:

The-Bone-Whistle-3D-Paperback-eReader
Darcy burned with the pain of knowing she’d failed. What happened when a prophecy didn’t come true? It must not have been much of a prophecy in the first place. And if they couldn’t trust in that, then they couldn’t trust in anything at all.

Five years ago, Darcy first received the prophecy of the Six, which stated she and her friends would save the land of Alitheia from a shadowy foe. For five years, she hasn’t known what the end will look like, but she certainly didn’t expect this.

Thrust back into Alitheia through unexpected means, Darcy winds up alone, scared, and without her recent memory. As she struggles to regain her lost memories and reunite with the ones she loves, she pieces together the prophecies and the oracles to find they all converge into one story¾a story that tells her just how much she’ll have to give to save both worlds, and everyone she loves.

Pursued through Alitheia by forces desperate to kill them, Darcy and her friends take a journey fraught with danger that will lead them, inevitably, to the final confrontation with the Shadow. Armed with newfound knowledge of how the prophecy of the Six will play out, Darcy and the others must have faith in the face of mounting odds and adversity. Ultimately, the greatest courage of all belongs not to those who give something of themselves, but to those who let go of what they could never control.

Filled with stunning losses, heart-wrenching reunions, unexpected twists, and the power of love and sacrifice, the conclusion to The Gateway Chronicles will leave you breathless and begging for more from author K. B. Hoyle.

"I really enjoyed this series from the opening pages of THE SIX, where we meet 13 year old, solipsistic, angst-ridden Darcy, through to the final pages of THE BONE WHISTLE where we leave her behind, matured and likely as grown as she will ever be."  - Suzy Goodreads Review
